Quote:Breaking: Nelson will vote for clotureposted at 9:47 am on December 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Every man has his price, apparently, and Harry Reid found Ben Nelson’s price for a cloture vote on ObamaCare. Nelson announced this morning that the language in the manager’s amendment on aborti0n will be enough to secure his support for Reid’s compromise bill, but Think Progress reports on what really sold Nelson — or bought Nelson, depending on your perspective. First, the Washington Post:

"Sen. Ben Nelson (Neb.), the final Democratic holdout on health care, was prepared to announce to his caucus Saturday morning that he would support the Senate reform bill, clearing the way for final passage by Christmas.
“We’re there,” said Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), as he headed into a special meeting to announce the deal.
Democratic leaders spent days trying to hammer out a deal with Nelson, and worked late Friday night with Nelson on abortion coverage language that had proved the major stumbling block. But Nelson also secured other favors for his home state."

A few favors? Try a boatload of federal cash:

Under the current merged legislation (the version unveiled on November 18th), the federal government fully finances care for the expanded population for two years and increases its matching funds (known as FMAP) thereafter. Page 98 of the managers amendment specifically identifies Nebraska for higher federal matching funds, fully funding its expansion for an additional year:

‘‘(3) Notwithstanding subsection (b) and paragraphs (1) and (2) of this subsection, the Federal medical assistance percentage otherwise determined under subsection (b) with respect to all or any portion of a fiscal year that begins on or after January 1, 2017, for the State of Nebraska, with respect to amounts expended for newly eligible individuals described in subclause (VIII) of section 1902(a)(10)(A)(i), shall be determined as provided for under subsection (y)(1) (A) (notwithstanding the period provided for in such paragraph)
Subsection (y)(1)(A) refers to page 399 of the original merged Senate legislation which fully funds state Mediciad expansions for the first two years. The manager’s amendment also provides 2.2% increase in FMAP to help states finance their existing Medicaid programs."

That will be worth at least hundreds of millions of dollars in federal cash for Nebraska … for the first three years. After that, Nebraskans get as screwed as the rest of the country.

According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn't fall into line.

Quote:Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a "naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson's vote." They are "threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?" asked the Senate staffer.

Indeed, Offutt is the headquarters for US Strategic Command, the successor to Strategic Air Command, and not by accident. STRATCOM was located in the middle of the country for strategic reasons. Its closure would be a massive blow to the economy of the state of Nebraska, but it would also be another example of this administration playing politics with our national security.

So, he hands him some Cash, the straight-up buying and selling of votes!

YAY! We can be just like all modern socialized and third world kleptocracies!

I remember the first bailout wouldn't pass till 180 million in pork was added to buy votes.

Then the money kept going to blue areas for blue projects to secure the votes and prevent anyone else from getting real funds - a punishment for no support.

Now, we have the actual buying and selling of votes here with our tax money.

And the worst, using US Military bases and in particular, Offutt AFB, (whose closure would damage Nebraska severly) a threats/leverage to secure votes.

So awesome they're using the US military and it's bases against people who defect from what the White House wants. I am glad that I can be a political asset, used to punish or reward politicians and the public.

It's really getting to be time for a new approach to fixing this...

The good ole boys of Nebraska might retire Ben over this one, let's hope so.

The thing is this is quite unpopular as is the agw nonsense and passing these things may de construct the democrat parties current hegemony fast.

Let them pass it,it can all be reversed.

Webb is an odd dude. Back in the late part of the Reagan admin,Webb became the sec of the navy and left under a cloud.

I think he's bright, but, likely is overly stubborn and hardheaded.

Typical Scot.

So Healthscare passes the Senate....

Wash Post is full of praise for the Kenyan:

Quote:Obama's plan amounts to this: partial coverage of the uninsured; modest improvements (possibly) in their health; sizable budgetary costs worsening a bleak outlook; significant, unpredictable changes in insurance markets; weak spending control. This is a bad bargain. Health benefits are overstated, long-term economic costs understated. The country would be the worse for this legislation's passage. What it's become is an exercise in political symbolism: Obama's self-indulgent crusade to seize the liberal holy grail of "universal coverage." What it's not is leadership.

Praise. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Concerning the buying of Nelson's vote, consider this. All other democrat Senators will need the same deals in their states. No way can he buy one and not buy the others I don't think. Buy them all Barack,do it. Use money China may not even loan you to accomplish it. It spends well in the USA.

BTW,anyone read of the ghost hospital in this bill? No one knows where it is or if it exists, but,it gets $100 million.

It exists in someone's pocket perhaps?

Perhaps. GoHere to check out the story. Even the NYT doesn't know where it is. Isn't it grand having a government like ours? I so respect the US government,I sincerely believe my money really is theirs.

Just kidding,a friend of mine really believes our assets belong at the disposal of the state. I was channelling my friend there.

EDIT: They found the hospital HERE

Who here thinks Representatives can't "be bought" like Senator Nelson?

There seems to be NO concern about what all this costs......is evryone sure the Reps don't have their price?

Most of them have their price. There are some, who will not cave in to principle, but they are a minority.

So do you think this is a done deal?

I'm not optimistic....like you said....most have their price, and they want this sooo bad, I think they are willing to pay any price.

They are going to pass some sort of bill, just so they will have something to 'crow' over. Whether the S&Gs will have the guts to go after a repeal, is questionable. Hey, they're S&Gs, right?
