Secession: Is it a Good Thing? Is It Possible?
No - that is a map of the new Confederacy. The USA is what is left. (...or right, if you think about it.)

It appears there may be more to this California secession thing that I had thought. Here's yet one more reason, courtesy of WUWT.

California Climate Secession Threat

Quote:Some private citizen groups in California, distraught at the prospect of an America under President Donald Trump, are advocating that the state secede from the union.

Constitutional scholars (and most Californians) assure us the separation is not going to happen. But is there any instance in which California could go its own way? What if Trump withdraws the nation from the United Nations Climate Change Accord and rejects the validity of the global warming threat altogether?

Could and should that set the stage for environmentally precocious California to break ranks with the president and join the Climate Change Treaty as a separate entity? It is not all that outlandish, considering California would not be declaring itself a sovereign state. It would simply be using its existing progressive greenhouse gas emission reduction policies to directly participate in a worldwide crusade to slow the rate of human-induced global warming. That shouldn’t exclude it from being a member of the United States in good standing.

California’s unilateral action could arguably be justified as a legitimate manifestation of States’ Rights that would serve as an inspiration at home and abroad. We are talking about policies aimed at having 33 percent of the state’s electricity come from clean, renewable energy by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050.

I wonder which way the aquifers run? Will Trump need to negotiate a treaty for water rights?

Boy, the secession movement in California just keeps getting the news. Maybe it will gain more traction, who knows.

‘Calexit’ Organizers Get Permission To Gather Petition Signatures For California To Secede

My guess is that they will indeed get enough signatures in order to get on the ballot.

John Fund, over at National Review suggests the state should just be divided into two parts. But his idea would never gain traction since only a thin strip including LA and San Fransisco, is would be hotly contested by the kooks. They obviously want more. AND they want to become independent.

I say let them go if they have the numbers. But the state should be divided into three sections. 1) North California, which is rural and a farming area: 2) Central California, where LA and San Francisco rests, and 3)Southern California consisting of San Diago. That way the San Diago south and the more mature, sane North can separately make up their own minds as well.

California has one of the largest economies in the world; hence their leverage. Since they have so much, they think evreyone else will just grab their ankles. What is best for the USA is for a space between Mexico and California to not be Calexited, and build two walls.

I hate to say it, but predictive economics says Mexico will eventually join the real world as their salaries rise and individual land ownership becomes reality. Once that happens, they will be more like us and Canada.

If California can secede so can California counties that wish to remain part of the US.

If the entire state secedes, then it can set up any internal rules and membership it desires. If it's own state constitution allows counties to split up then sobeit. If counties asked to stay withe USA and the state denies them, then the USA may fell impelled to go in to secure those counties.

James Poulos, over at Foreign Policy, has an idea as to what a can of worms just might be stirred up over a real Californication secession.  There is a lot of food for thought here.

California Really Has What It Takes to Secede.  But is America's largest state ready for the wars that would could follow?

The USA would have to have free access to the coast and a great port in LA and Oakland or we'd stop it via force, IMO. If they were cool with that, I'd say have at it.

It might be best for them and us.

Patrick, had you even looked at the article, you would have seen how they proposed dividing up the state. I don't really agree with the way they proposed it, but I am in favor of the Kooks going their own way.

I am in favor for them to do it as well if that's what the majority desire, John. But, we'd insist on port access out there.

I read the first article and I have read previous threats for northern Cal to leave the state. It might be that happened and that would be fine, too, IMO.

Majority schamority! This is a Constitutionally limited Republic, and it is the single individual who is sovereign. Don't let a plurality of kooks run over the rest of the populace.

Unlike you, we believe in free association, not tyranny. You can go join the US Army when they invade California, keep in touch with us.

Free association is a nice euphemism for the Klu Klux Klan, or the "Collective Good." Tyranny is also an ugly dysphemism for Individual Sovereignty. People get bent out of shape that some family illegally entered our country (a criminal act which states clearly that they have made the decision NOT to be bound by our laws) is not treated as citizens who have no criminal records. My minor in Logic and Philosophy at UM left me with the idea that choosing to do one illegal act defines the person. The question is not whether they are honorable or dishonorable - but if any laws will constrain them. Where is the dividing line? Illegal immigration (where death is one aspect in the decision), petty theft, manslaughter, murder, rape, insurrection, treason, terrorism? Once that line has been crossed, all are just as legitimate as any other. There is no logic that decrees a parent who brings a family illegally across the border has any decent qualities at all.

In the Civil War, remember that there were many inhabitants of the South who fought for the North. There are more to one side than total agreement, unless those running the show are despots and tyrants, themselves.

No, it's a nice statement like this, if you don't like me, you get to stay out of my house, I can't force you to join me.

No euphemism at all. You talk in that stuff avoiding a discussion with your fake news bullshit.

Fake news is not BS. Real news that is lied about is one thing - but news that never happened is something else. Real news can be twisted and slanted - but news that is invented for the sole purpose of hurting opponents defines itself. There is no debate on this one.
