One thing's for certain. It the defector was shot one or more times in his elbow, he will not have use of that joint ever again. They may have to amputate the arm, from the elbow down. S4

If they can give someone an artificial knee, hip or shoulder, they should be able to do the same with a shoulder.

There is no report about that so far, it is said that there is no intention to carry out any major surgery from now on.
The injuries are not with the elbow, but the left shoulder and the right upper arm - see picture.

The most serious injuries are with the abdomen, some bullets seriously damaged parts of the intestine.
He lost a lot of blood, over 16 liter of blood transfusion was necessary during the first surgery.

There are still serious complications, malnurished, intestines full with parasites, no good functioning liver, blood poisoning in some parts of the abdomen and so on, but he is expected to survive. Treatment is now more about medication and food supplements for about one month.

They show him from now on TV some shows with the GG (South Korean Girls-Generation-Entertainment Group)
I understand, it helps him psychologically....

Former NK soldier likes K-pop, US TV

By Kim Min-joo

The North Korean soldier who was shot while defecting to the South across the inter-Korean border has regained consciousness, and reportedly expressed liking K-pop music and American TV shows playing in his ward.

His doctor, Lee Cook-jong, said at a press conference in Suwon on Wednesday that music and TV has been playing in the ward to help the patient relax and gain emotional stability.

Lee said the soldier reacted favorably to “Gee,” a song by Girl’s Generation, and expressed fondness of K-pop girl groups.

Lee also mentioned the former soldier liked American TV and films, including “CSI,” and they had watched “The Transporter,” together. He added that the entertainment had been deliberately chosen to be played in the ward, as contents concerning current events could overwhelm the patient.

“I had some conversations with the soldier, and it sounds like the positive images he had of South Korea motivated him to defect,” Lee said.

The 24-year-old soldier, identified only by his surname Oh, is recovering from two major surgeries following injuries he sustained from being shot. Lee said it would take at least a month for the soldier to become stable enough to undergo an investigation from military authorities.

There is one soldier who made it across the border in 2015 (?) - without injuries, without even discovered by any North Korean border guard during fog.

Not sure however if this was in 2015, and what happened next. Some follow-up comments of this Youtube video call this man a spy, sent back to NK again.
Not sure what is true with this story or not. I cannot find any references.

This North Korean soldier was lucky... he looks very slim and small compared to South Korean soldiers.
