Gore: Polluters Manipulate Climate Info

By GILLIAN WONG

Quote:SINGAPORE (AP) - Research aimed at disputing the scientific consensus on global warming is part of a huge public misinformation campaign funded by some of the world's largest carbon polluters, former Vice President Al Gore said Tuesday.

"There has been an organized campaign, financed to the tune of about $10 million a year from some of the largest carbon polluters, to create the impression that there is disagreement in the scientific community," Gore said at a forum in Singapore. "In actuality, there is very little disagreement."

Gore likened the campaign to the millions of dollars spent by U.S. tobacco companies years ago on creating the appearance of scientific debate on smoking's harmful effects.

"This is one of the strongest of scientific consensus views in the history of science," Gore said. "We live in a world where what used to be called propaganda now has a major role to play in shaping public opinion."

Isn't 'manipulation' supposed to imply some degree competency?

You'd think Gore would respond to the latest misinformation from NASA that he originally used to bolster his arguments.

All that matters to the RealClimate guys is that they get out their own spin.

that's exactly where the debate on AGW is now, the battle of the spin machines. Science loses in the end.

Wow 10 million  With that kind of money the government could probably build 10 outhouses http://www.jldr.com/oh1mill.html

Of course we can always count on the news to give us as little information as possible. For example, just how much do major companies spend on research in climate change. Is their any proof of them changing statistics or are we functioning by the "only the government is objective rule"? How many people make money of the govenrment spending money off of climate change, and if so how would we find out?

I Was On the Global Warming Gravy Train
By David Evans
Posted on 5/28/2007

Quote:This evidence was not conclusive, but why wait until we are absolutely certain when we apparently need to act now? So the idea that carbon emissions were causing global warming passed from the scientific community into the political realm. Research increased, bureaucracies were formed, international committees met, and eventually the Kyoto protocol was signed in 1997 to curb carbon emissions.

The political realm in turn fed money back into the scientific community. By the late 1990s, lots of jobs depended on the idea that carbon emissions caused global warming. Many of them were bureaucratic, but there were a lot of science jobs created too.

I was on that gravy train, making a high wage in a science job that would not have existed if we didn't believe carbon emissions caused global warming. And so were lots of people around me; there were international conferences full of such people. We had political support, the ear of government, big budgets. We felt fairly important and useful (I did anyway). It was great. We were working to save the planet!
