Interestingly enough I have seen quite a few of those videos you linked me to already, including 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' (which was on British television), I also gave State of Fear a read (one of the worst books I have ever read - even as a peice of fiction). None of them I found particularly convincing, often misleading. I flicked through the notes section of Crichton's book to look up some of the links and datagraphs that the handsome rouge-scientist was urgently passing across to the naive lawyer, helpfully provided in the appendix. About ten (out of about hundred) worked properly and seemed to contradict the context of the story.

I have to say that the arguments formed by many of the more hardened sceptics are unconvincing, especially against the core point many sceptics seem to front (that the sun controls the temperature and that atmospheric gases have little to do with it). Contradicting the premise of the greenhouse effect.

Quote:Eigil Friis-Christensen, director of the Danish National Space Centre, has issued a statement accusing the film-makers of fabricating data based on his work looking at the links between solar activity and global temperatures.

Quote:The C4 programme also used out-of-date solar cycle data relating to the past 30 or 40 years which made it appear as if temperatures and solar activity were rising together when in fact solar activity has levelled off for the past few decades. "After 1985 we don't see any rise or shortening of the solar cycles compared to what we saw in the temperature [record]," Dr Friiss-Christensen said.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/...47927.html

This discussion aside, my one question to sceptics in this forum is (presuming you believe in causality): what effect do you think pumping millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere will have?

A far greener planet, first and foremost.

And as I have stated many times before, a warmer planet is a more hospital planet. Obviously, you have not watched the "Little Ice Age: Big Chill" program. It is a cooling planet that is far more dangerous to humans than an increase in warmth.

Also, just because one thing doubles in volume does not mean that the effects will be doubled. Things do not work that way. If CO2 doubles, the effect will be miniscule, and we are not nearly there yet. Plus, the more CO2 increases, the faster it will be reabsorbed, as the planet balances itself under normal conditions.

However, believe what you will. We are in the early stages of cooling,a nd the almost total lack of sunspot activity is the main indicator.

Yeah, JohnL, that's pretty much the way I'm understanding it.

Although, I've seen where scientists argue that their could be, could be, a slight warming effect with a higher CO2 level and other scientists argue that their could be, could be, a slight cooling effect with a higher CO2 level.

The problem with "causality" is that we have to know for sure what is causing what.

We are seeing, however, that the result of over-reacting to the CO2 levels is damaging some nations' economies.
I know you think you understand what you thought I said,
but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant!

A great resource.
That is some work.

Would you like a copy of a pp I put together, (PM me an email address if you want a copy, it's about 4Mbs, and lasts about 40 minutes)
a layman's version of what "maybe" wrong with the HS.
Old hat to scientists, I am well aware, but I'm constantly surprised by the numbers of
ordinary folks that just simply are not aware of it, or it's problems.
Hopefully seeing the pp will help others to question.

NB - Have you seen this post about the political "history" of the HS.

Thanks Derek, but it is in need of another revamp, as it continues to grow on a continuing basis. I have held off because it will entail so much time and effort, but I know that I must do it soon. I'll probably just start another new thread and ensure that there are enough empty posts to ensure for more expansion.

Lately, I have been negligent, because there is just so much material available, and most of it now is on the side of the skeptics, as they are not on the offense, and the AGW side is in defensive mode. I suspect a full scale retreat following this colder than usual winter, and the sun continues to be bare of sunspot activity.

BTY when is Sunspot Cycle 24 going to really start up on at least a semi-regular basis. The longer it remains quiet, the colder the planet will become in the future. I fully expect a Dalton Minimum type retreat, and once and for all this AGW debate will wild and die as it well should.

the tide turned last year, but it is going to accelerate to such an extent that most likely within five years, the scientific/political/journalism community will be clamouring for us to halt the coming ice age. Go figure that one. Wink1

I agree in the blogs and in science circles, it is / has but,
in the mass media, the political world, "television", and every day ordinary life,
no it has not yet, the truth of the situation is still being stifled.
It is a dangerous time to relax.

Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel (ie Palin), I hope.

Believe me, there won't be any relaxing until a stake is driven into the heart of the monster. There are just too many blogs and sites out there dedicated to just such at this time. And the number of scientists, who have been afraid to come out, are now doing so, and that is always the beginning of the end for any hoax, no matter how orchestrated it may be.

To me the biggest problem in the future is the coming ice age hysteria, and the call for government action on that. While I have no doubt that the next ice age is just around the corner, we are not at the point of having to do something about it,...........yet.

But increasing CO2 will not solve the problem. It will take something like opening up the Istmus of Panama again, or placing some huge reflector in space, so we can regulate the amount of sunlight striking the earth's surface.

Anyway, the next decade is going to be fun to watch as far as the climate science goes. I suspect James Hansen will be "officially" retiring soon, And Algore will probably just "go away", as if last year was not soon enough. Wink1

Re the hysteria of the next coming ice age. I see your point.
I think the lessons learned from AGW hoax, and the internet and science blogs / forums
(which will gain far better long term credability because of exposing the AGW hoax)
will provide a buffer that has not been there before.
Times change, and for the better.
Maybe the credability of the (politically biased) media beast
will have been mortally wounded, permanently.

Interesting that many of those sources are British in origin.

The debate is nearly over here all things considered, so it is interesting to see the results being brought back from the dead in the US.

Most likely they'll just claim that they were misled by the scientists.

They may well try to claim that,
but the viewing public has become far more savvy .
I doubt many will buy it.

Mac,

There has been NO debate over here. It is just starting. The zeitgeist gets it's say, then facts have theirs and often the 2 are not the same.

Has there been a debate over there?

A pretty quick one. It was concluded that there is more scientific consensus on the subject of climate change than there was on the existence of CFC's and the holes in the ozone layer - anyone sceptical about this?

Although its wikipedia, this is one of the best lists around:

It would be nice if you could dig up some statistics on this.

The phrase "scientific consensus" has been often used by AGW supporters as a bludgeon to shame or browbeat those who disagree. This alone, raises my suspicions. In addition the list of scientists who do not concur is large, something like 31,000 scientists have signed a petition disagreeing. In addition, science is not supposed to work by consensus, especially when the research field is new. If the scientific community has decided everything was known that needs to be known about "climate change", then why are they asking for $5B more in research grants every year? There is a consensus on Newton's second law, and so, no research grants are desired. Quite a number of first rank scientists, originally believing in AGW have changed their minds. See for example
http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?F...63dc2d02cb

In addition, there are stories about scientists not being able to get grants if they question AGW. At the moment I don't have a link for this, but if true, it hits research scientists where they live: getting government grants. In the sciences, that is how you get tenure and promotion (most of the time).

So, I wonder who it was that made the conclusion you cited.
Jefferson: I place economy among the first and important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our choice between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy.
