Actually, one recent interesting tactic is to weave up a bit doom and gloom using the good news of declining U.S. and Iraqi casualties.

Quote:"American forces have routed Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, the Iraqi militant network, from every neighborhood in Baghdad a top American General said today, allowing American troops involved in the 'surge' to depart as planned."

Routed. Every. Planned.

Not "making headway against." Routed.

Not "some neighborhoods." Every.

Not "leave in disgrace." Depart as planned.

Am I misreading the reporting here? If this is true, this isn't just pretty good news, this is extraordinary news. This is GREAT news.

Here's what it is not: It is not Page A19 news.

... and to add some rare criticism of the Bush Admin from the resident Bushie ...

Quote:the White House has to help sell the story of success in Iraq. The White House alone has the capacity to move the Success in Iraq story from page A19 to page A1.

Guys the quotes above are from the NYT!! ... granted it's in the back row of the bus but still!! At some point, the electorate is going to figure this stuff out ... here's hoping it's between now and next November.

Here's some good news. Hope the Iraqis can hold what has been claimed since 1-07 by our increased trooper tempo:

The latest spin involves questioning whether the momentum can be sustained as the drawdown occurs. It's a valid question, but it generally ignores (or at the very least skips over) the progress. I think the original plan was to have at least 30K out by April ... now it sounds like July. If things work out, I wouldn't expect any victory parades.

... and if I were one of those brave kids that are doing the dirty work, I'd be pretty POed about the accomplishments that are being ignored.

Quote: ...the great risk, is if you do this too quickly that you could place a burden on the Iraqi security forces prior to them being ready to accept it...

All this coming at a time that Congress, after over 200 years, is deciding that it has the role of C&C. (where are the rolley eyes when ya really need 'em?)
