China's Unmarried Men
#21
Where did you hear all this, especially the Athens portion? And a 'biological scheme'? Again, are you sure you are getting this from reliable sources? What this would all mean is that biology is guilty of genetic schizophrenia, in that it would be attempting to counteract its own propensity to produce a genetically stronger female.

Keep in mind that females are in deed genetically stronger than males. There are more of them successfully born and reaching maturity because of this. Females have to be stronger because they are the ones carrying and giving birth to children. When mothers die, the offspring are far more likely to die with them. Any species is successful when it is better able to pass its genes on to the next generation with the greatest success.

Female infanticide is obviously the result of a conscious effort culturally to produce more males. It has nothing to do with genetics, to the best of my meager knowledge.

This history of ancient Athens resorting to female infanticide has me bumfuzzled. Free women in Athens society were had higher status than in other societies, even if they did not equal males. Oracles were women, as in the Oracle of Delphi. I'll have to do more searching on this subject.

Nay, Anon is correct, this will work, but it may take a hundred of generations or so for a measurable effect.

Ok, then please produce studies that buttress the thinking of the two of you.

I can see that skimming is becoming the rule of the day. I'm going to begin treating it accordingly.

Its by an amateur blogger named Andrew Lehman. He hypothesizes that social structure and culture are linked to the distribution of sex hormones(testosterone and estrogen).

If you feel like reading this, here you go:

Actually, Lehman argues that evolution happens in growth spurts, so meaningful biological changes can happen within a generation. Afterall, if Lehman's idea that different types of cultures are linked to different types of people is correct, than the rapid cultural changes in the West must be linked to biological changes in the populations.

Anon,

That sounds accurate. Only the alpha dogs will win the babes. Clowns like me will do w/o and get more frustrated by the day.

Either way, war is the answer. Check out demographics in Germany and Serbia previous to their hugest war efforts. Way too many peckers. It just makes good logic, testosterone+ is why idiotic macho war decisions are made.

I am hoping the citizenry of the USA have become isolationists by then.

Only when it is one gene that determines the trait. It takes much longer otherwise.

(I happen to know a bit about this since I'm actually doing some line breeding).

Totally offtopic: if I have time, I'll post a fish clip that shows the difference between the Chinese and the Vietnamese mentality.

In July, 2014, Fred asked me to revisit this thread in seven years to see what is happening inside China due to their unbalanced male-to-female ratio.  Its not quite that time yet, but this needs to be reported, because China isn't the only country having this 'opportunity'.  I never realized this but India is now having the very same problem: too many young adult males and no women to marry.

And note that this article is from the South China Morning Post.  My guess is that there may well be more problems already, than the central government is willing to acknowledge.

Too many men: China and India battle with the consequences of gender imbalance.  In the world’s most populous nations, men outnumber women by 70 million. Both countries are trying to come to grips with the policies that created this generation of gender imbalance

Quote:Nothing like this has happened in human history. A combination of cultural preferences, government decree and modern medical technology in the world’s two largest countries has created a gender imbalance on a continental scale. Men outnumber women by 70 million in China and India.

The consequences of having too many men, now coming of age, are far-reaching: beyond an epidemic of loneliness, the imbalance distorts labour markets, drives up savings rates in China and drives down consumption, artificially inflates certain property values and parallels increases in violent crime, trafficking or prostitution in a growing number of locations.

Those consequences are not confined to China and India, but reach deep into their Asian neighbours and distort the economies of Europe and the Americas. Barely recognised, the ramifications of too many men are only starting to come into sight.

“In the future, there will be millions of men who can’t marry, and that could pose a very big risk to society,” warns Li Shuzhuo, a leading demographer at Xian Jiaotong University, in Xian, Shaanxi province.

Well, No Schist Sherlock.  Just think of the sexually frustrated young men, who will take things out on others.  Just imagine the increase in crime, including murder.

I wonder how long it is going to take before Polyandry becomes a common sight in those two countries?  After all, that's one possible solution, right?  S5

A war between India and China would quickly solve that problem.
The true purpose of democracy is not to select the best leaders — a clearly debatable obligation — but to facilitate the prompt and peaceful removal of obviously bad ones.

I had thought about that one as well. Spiteful

Of course a two-way nuclear exchange could cut things down a great deal more.

No because nuclear exchanges kill men and women indiferently. It won't change the gender ratio. You battles with soldiers lining up in front of each others and then shooting.
