Sience Fiction Chronology Site
#1
I just discovered this exciting site, while attempting to find a reference to the Buzzard ramjet that I thought origionated with either Jerry Pournelle, or Larry Niven. What I stumbled across here is one of the most complex and detailed timelines of some science fiction writers, particularly Niven AND Pournelle.

In my opinion, the Pournelle timeline is more realistic, if you discount the Soviet Union's continued existence. In fact, the very first novel they collaberated together with, was "The Mote In G-d's eye", which I consider to be the greatest science fiction novel of all time. And it was set in the Pournelle timeline.

Enjoy.

Jerry Pournelle's Future History

Larry Niven's Known Space

Also, here is the Wikipedia Future history page.

I know that there is one on H Beam Piper's Terro-Human Future, as I once saw it, but I haven't rediscovered it yet. Perhaps Michael knows where to get it.

Haven't visited here for awhile. The Pournelle timeline is illustrative of something I've known for a long time, and of which Pournelle must also have noticed. Asimov wrote of personal hand-held computers - but they came into existence hundreds of years faster than he dreamed. He envisioned huge super computers that took up whole city blocks and needed many technicians to decipher for its use. In real life, it took almost no time at all for that SF prediction to be surpassed by reality. IOW, science works faster than SF.

I think Pournelle purposefully created a future history, then applied the superfast results that outrun SF, and shrunk his timeline to unrealistic proportions. The problem is the CD happening a decade ago, because politics is not the same as science. Look at how AGW has been propped up by politics to block normal scientific maturity.
