Why the US Defence Budget is the Highest in the World
#1
Just the tip of the iceberg IMO.

TransDigm to repay $16 million for overcharging the Pentagon

...but who is not overcharging the Pentagone?

...F35 anyone?

Thats' one of the many, many, many minor reasons, but its by  far not the top of the pile.

But let's assume it is not being cheated all over the place.  Why do you believe the defense budget is the highest in the world Fred?

The reason Reagan defeated the USSR was because it had a huge military which spent too much of its national budget. Nobody spent a higher percentage of its budget. When the US digital militarized Stealth program made all the Russian anti-EMP tube technology obsolescent, they were done. Their military was bankrupted. Their arms were outclassed. Their economy imploded, and the business world gained supremacy over their military cabal. Glasnost and Perestroika opened up KGB files which confirmed that after WWII, the USA cut its military budget, but the USSR increased their military budget to beggar their economy.

The USA maintained a minimalist military budget which allowed our economy to skyrocket. It came to a point where the minimalist military budget hurt the economy more than it sustained and protected it. It was the Clinton theft of technology for graft that allowed other nations to gain footholds using our stolen tech against us.

It sure looks like Trump is on the right track.

Because it's USD 700 billion.

The question is not qbout the size of the military but the cost of it. Same question, if you want, about the cost of medical care. Or edication.
Areas where overcharging is common practice.

No Fred, its the "per capita" cost that matters most.

But there is also this.  Who is standing in the way of Totalitarianism around the world?  Who is paying the butcher's bill for maintaining civilization in Eurolala land?  What I find to be so interesting is that the very people who wag their fingers and Tut-tut all over the place are the very ones unable to defend themselves, In Spite Of history's lessons.

What do you think would happen if those EVIL American Pigs were to pull out of places around the world?  Personally I think we should do just that and let the rest of the world take care of themselves.  Screw Them All if they are unwilling to defend their own Liberties.

JohnL I'm not talking about defense policies or per capita, or per GDP proportion allocated to defense.

But on the overcharging practice as a reason why anything in the military seems to cost astronomical amounts.
If you want an effective military, you have to be concerned by that.

If your goal is just to boast an amount of money to prove that you do the effort (LOL) you may get a bad surprise once seriously attacked.

Forget about cost and consider amortization. A toilet seat doesn't cost a thousand dollars - but the money for the creative engineering design is expensive, and paymasters look in all the cubbyholes to cover what they need to pay to get the job done. Our overall costs to get a mature nuclear technology cost a fortune, but other countries skipped all the research and went straight to stealing smartness because of their lack of it.

The third world and petty despots outnumber us, because laziness and greed is easy, but quality is hard. I guess we can all see what side you are on.
