Canadian Volunteers Vietnam War
It took me a while to find this 1983 article in MacLeans Magazine archives. I went to school with Roddie Foley, what is stated in this article is true. I was halfway through basic training when my parents sent a US Army press release from my hometown newspaper stating he had been awarded the Silver Star. I did a search but couldn't find his name among those who were awarded this medal in Vietnam. Their records can't be that accurate. I bumped into Roddie while home on leave shortly after he was discharged from the US Army, he told me about the protesters that met them when they returned home. I grew up in a border area, quite a few people volunteered to serve in Vietnam, Gary Butts was killed in 1971.
The true purpose of democracy is not to select the best leaders — a clearly debatable obligation — but to facilitate the prompt and peaceful removal of obviously bad ones.
