Not apostasy so it had to be something he was doing. Catholics only do this for apostates don't they?

Not necessarily, here a list of Catholic excommunicated. The ones that took place in the 21st century should give you a better appreciation of what it takes.

The Later Day Saints have a system of leadership that elevate regular, but usually successful people, into the role of Bishop of each Ward. There aren't tenured leaders who grow in power. Each Bishop has a relatively short time as the head of local areas. Bad people usually don't last, but people are people. The Wards unite in community efforts and know each other pretty well. I expect them to keep their leaders on the up and up.
