Alexandria Shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise
#21
John, what are the typical and maximum rates of fire for an SKS rifle? Would it count as a semi-automatic?

The police/FBI in their news conference today said that James Hodgkinson, the Alexandria shooter, had modified the rifle. They did not say what those modifications were. I have read that some rifles capable of automatic fire are altered for sale so that they will not autofire, but they can also be easily remodified to restore their capability for high-speed automatic firing.

I doubt it was modified for fully automatic fire.  There are all sorts of ways to modify the SKS.  You can view a bunch of them right here.

As for its rate of fire, watch the video above, and you can see its rate of fire.  Its a really nice carbine.  S5

It was never designed for fully automatic fire or to be capable of selective fire. It is exclusively a semi-automatic. There is no variant of the SKS that wasnt. John's link for 'modifications' show all sorts of add-ons like scope mounts and changes that allow magazines to function ... I didn't see anything about making it full auto. It might be altered to function as a full-automatic (something which it isn't) ... the same way you can pick up a lawn mower and use it as a hedge trimmer ... but that's not how it was designed to function. Many there are a lot of things that can be made to malfunction and I expect there is a way to force a malfunction in an SKS that would simply fire the entire clip [again, not magazine] en mass. The gun used was neither fully automatic nor was it designed to function as one and it was never designed to function with a detachable magazine and did not have one. The salient point is that it was presented as something it wasn't by the media ... for a specific purpose.

Dennis Prager ask about the attempted murder of congressmen.

What would happen IF A TRUMP SUPPORTER HAD SHOT A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN?

There is tragic symmetry in that observation - because it is the same thing that makes the concept of a Trump supporter shooting a Democrat Congressman so one-sided. The media of course would freak out against it, but so what? the media doesn't care how one-sided they are. Such an event would only validate the insanity. That it could or would happen is water off a duck.

We had a tragic shooting in Colorado Springs nearly two years back.  The timing was such that it probably pre-dated the real hysteria over Trump's candidacy and very little hay was made over it.  But I'm surprised none of the propagandist that pose as journalists hasn't gone back and tried to make a linkage.

It would have been the perfect story for that ilk if it had occurred a year or so later.  But the honest truth is that this guy is bat sh*t crazy.  He's been found incompetent most recently in May.  They are still trying different cocktails of drugs to get him 'sane' enough to be held accountable.
