So Zika was designed as a genocide agent? Doesn't seem too logical, because it is not very lethal, just horrendous in the symptom department. Why use a fly swatter to bring down a flaming dragon?

Colombia: 3,177 pregnant women with Zika; no microcephaly

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos said Saturday that there's no evidence Zika has caused any cases of the birth defect known as microcephaly in his country, though it has diagnosed 3,177 pregnant women with the virus.

Santos also announced that a U.S. medical-scientific team will arrive in Colombia to help investigate the mosquito-borne virus.

Brazilian officials say they suspect Zika is behind a seemingly unusual number of microcephaly cases, in which children are born with unusually small heads. The link is not confirmed, but it has helped prompt the World Health Organization to declare an emergency over the virus.

Santos says Zika apparently has affected more than 25,600 Colombians overall.

And all the billions to fight Ebola, have they been used already? Did they forget it? IMO it's easier to ask funds for new viruses than for old onces (thought HIV has made a record of longevity in fund raisings). Once poeple see that a virus did nothing, bring a new one and let them believe that this one is very scary.

The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 1,000, raising concerns the outbreak is escalating and could yet spiral out of control.

It is already the second worst Ebola outbreak in history, although some way behind the 2014 West Africa epidemic which killed 11,000 people.

According to the DRC Ministry of Health, 1,008 people have died from the deadly virus, including 942 confirmed deaths and 66 probable. There have been 1,529 cases since the outbreak began last August - less than a third of those infected have survived.

As recently as mid-March, the director general of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, insisted that the crisis was being brought under control, with reported cases dropping and the deadly disease contained to just two hotspots – Butembo and Katwa.  

But since Dr Tedros’ assertion the epidemic has rapidly escalated, with several grim milestones reached this week.

On Tuesday, the DRC's Ministry of Health confirmed that 26 people had died from the virus – the highest death toll on a single day. And with 126 new infections reported, this week has seen more cases than any other since the epidemic was confirmed in North Kivu last August.

The biggest fear is what will happen when ebola reaches hub centers. This is akin to a Michael Crichton novel with all its possibilities.

The African refugees, especially from Congo, are moving across the southern border with Mexico. I wonder how much ebola, and other infections, are being carried into the US? And I wonder if this is being purposefully spread by some anti-US groups?

Things are getting out of hand here.  Now the virus has spread to a city with over one million inhabitants.  If it gets loose in a large population, and establishes itself, it may become impossible to stop.

Ebola outbreak in the Congo spreads to a new city where one MILLION people live in the epidemic that has killed 1,600

Ebola has spread to the Congolese city of Goma, which has a population of more than a million people, as the virus continues to devastate the region.  

The victim is a pastor who had arrived in the city by bus after visiting Butembo, a town around 200miles (320km) north in the centre of the outbreak.

He had been preaching at a church where he would have touched worshippers 'including the sick', the country's health ministry said on Sunday.

Authorities have urged people to remain calm after the government said the chances of the virus spreading were 'low'.

But tensions are high and two health workers were murdered in their homes over the weekend.

Experts have said the escalation was 'unexpected' and should serve as a reminder to the World Health Organization to declare a global emergency.

In this, the second worst outbreak in history, 1,665 people have died from Ebola since August last year.
