Immortality by 2045 or bust.
Government is necessary because people left unchecked will do evil.

The government is composed of people left unchecked

It amazes me that some people still come up with that infinitely stupid idea that immortality would somehow be "boring." God has promised to give us immortality, since all life comes from Him. Being able to live forever, traveling throughout the universe, discovering all there is to discover, accomplishing any lofty enterprise that we conceive of, would never, ever get boring. Decline and death are what are boring. That is what makes life futile. Life that never ends is life that is truly worthwhile! Let's make sure that we do not pass it up!

If I may, without immediately being consigned to the religion forum, I would like to share the view of eternal life given by the Seventh-day Adventist prophet, Ellen G. White, at the conclusion of her magnum opus, published in 1911, The Great Controversy (pp. 677, 678):

Quote:There, immortal minds will contemplate with never-failing delight the wonders of creative power, the mysteries of redeeming love. There will be no cruel, deceiving foe to tempt to forgetfulness of God. Every faculty will be developed, every capacity increased. The acquirement of knowledge will not weary the mind or exhaust the energies. There the grandest enterprises may be carried forward, the loftiest aspirations reached, the highest ambitions realized; and still there will arise new heights to surmount, new wonders to admire, new truths to comprehend, fresh objects to call forth the powers of mind and soul and body.

All the treasures of the universe will be open to the study of God's redeemed. Unfettered by mortality, they wing their tireless flight to worlds afar--worlds that thrilled with sorrow at the spectacle of human woe and rang with songs of gladness at the tidings of a ransomed soul. With unutterable delight the children of earth enter into the joy and the wisdom of unfallen beings. They share the treasures of knowledge and understanding gained through ages upon ages in contemplation of God's handiwork. With undimmed vision they gaze upon the glory of creation--suns and stars and systems, all in their appointed order circling the throne of Deity. Upon all things, from the least to the greatest, the Creator's name is written, and in all are the riches of His power displayed.

And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence, and happiness increase. The more men learn of God, the greater will be their admiration of His character. As Jesus opens before them the riches of redemption and the amazing achievements in the great controversy with Satan, the hearts of the ransomed thrill with more fervent devotion, and with more rapturous joy they sweep the harps of gold; and ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of voices unite to swell the mighty chorus of praise.

"And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever." Revelation 5:13.

The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love.

Sure can. Imagine being downloaded into a computer and then bombarded by a stream of the Kenyac and like.... no escape.

I bet it would not take even you more than a few months to chose any horrible end over the unending horror... S6

You fail to appreciate the literally unending possibilities for new things to discover and do, especially if you have complete freedom and control over your environment. Even if you only exist in a computer, you could invent for yourself the capacity to feel, if you lacked it before. You could modify yourself, give yourself new abilities, learn to project yourself all over the cosmos. Were you bored with life yesterday? Are you bored with life today? Will you be bored with life tomorrow? Why believe you would be bored with life ever? And nobody says you have to be a solipsist. There could be other consciousnesses in your computer realm, with whom you could interact unpredictably.
Once you are downloaded into a computer what you can do depends on the Admin. QED. S4

One way to put minds into a computer is this:

The brain is scanned and the neurone structure is reproduced on-the-fly by a 3D circuit printer.
When the brain connections of the billions of neurones are reproduced, the machine start thinking in the same way as the mind's owner.

The problem is that the rays used to scan the brain would have to be so intensive that it would kill the patient a few second after the scan is finished leaving him with only his virtual version to continue his life.

"There is a risk of operating system failure during the operation before the brain can be copied entirely, especialy with the last version of Windows™. In this case the patient would face immediate death instead of immortality.

But it's a risk poeple are ready to take."

Personaly, I'd agree to virtual immortality to the condition that I can play The Smps3 for free and forever!

In a real download of a real mind into a computer, the computerized mind would have to be its own administrator. It would have to have free will and be able to make its own choices, unconstrained by any arbitrary programming. The Three Laws of Robotics would have to be overruled by the "Zeroth Law," in Asimovian parlance.

A robot that did not obey the Three Laws at all. .............................. A terminator that could love.
MV, Ron, this is a good point, that if you are living in a computer, the least that you should be granted is that you be the administrator of this computer and have read-write accassess to all files.
Imagine if you can't stop or enable services that you want or need, but a real human can alter your life from his finger tips? Unacceptable!
