Wonders of Carbon
#21
Suddenly, the design for building border fences now has at least one element. Carbyne fences?

How easy is it to burn through carbyne?

At the moment the flammable temperature for carbyne is 451° F, because it only exists on paper, so far.

John said it was being mass-produced.

The huge production is 6,400 carbon atoms long. I'm not even sure that is measurable. My question is that if it is so strong, why is it unstable? ...seems like a contradiction in terms.

Ron, you're going to have to keep an eye on your brother. S13
Actually, I just passed this along, from other places. Like this one: World’s strongest material: Scientists create 'wonder substance' carbyne in large amounts for the first time.

Quote:After eluding scientists for more than 50 years, a team of researchers has now found a way to not only synthesize carbyne, but to mass produce it.
This one-dimensional form of carbon is thought to be stronger than any other known to scientists, surpassing the stiffness of diamond by more than 40-fold.
In the new method, the researchers have used a double-walled carbon nanotube to grow stable carbon chains of record-breaking lengths..................

Yeah! I read all that. It is theoretically important, but since it is now only existent within a nannite tube, it seems to be a bit early to take it seriously.

It does sound like the kind of material that would be needed to build a space elevator. Arthur C. Clarke would be so pleased, if he were still around.

Here's one more carbon based material, graphene, which is making batteries with more power and charging time greatly reduced.
