#1
I found this interresting interview about how the mentalities in the US. It's complementary to the Broken Window Fallasy and the Unproductive activities in western economies threads.
Page 2 and 3 are the most interresting.

Nice article fredle... . Obviously the US has become hamstrung with environmental concerns and a mania for regulations of all sorts. The "can do" society is being squelched by the left.

It seems likely that the Alaska pipeline will close soon, due to insufficient crude being produced on the north slope.

I recall the screeching of the environmentalists when the pipeline was proposed. They claimed there would be numerous breaks which would pollute vast areas of the landscape. They claimed that caribou and moose migrations would be interrupted and herds diminished. They claimed that the heat from the pipeline would melt the permafrost and produce breaks. They claimed welds were poorly done. On and on it went. It retrospect, the pipeline was vast success, with only insignificant problems.

But, mamma Earth is sacred, don't you know. Gotta take every precaution. This narrative has to be replaced by a more pragmatic viewpoint.
Jefferson: I place economy among the first and important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our choice between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy.
