Catholic church warns of global warming
#1
that's rather an argument for the denial nutcases. how can anybody be taken seriously who believes in creation by some deity, virgin birth and stuff?

VATICAN CITY – A Vatican-appointed panel of scientists has reported what climate change experts have been warning for years: the Earth is getting warmer, glaciers are melting, and urgent measures are necessary to stem the damage.

The scientists called for urgent reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and reductions in methane and other pollutants that warm the air, and for improved observation of mountain glaciers to better track their changes.

The Pontifical Academy of Sciences, a Vatican advisory panel, hosted a conference last month on the causes and consequences of retreating mountain glaciers. Its final report, dated May 5 and signed by independent glaciologists, climate scientists, meteorologists and chemists, was posted on the Vatican website Tuesday.

“We appeal to all nations to develop and implement, without delay, effective and fair policies to reduce the causes and impacts of climate change on communities and ecosystems, including mountain glaciers and their watersheds, aware that we all live in the same home,” the report said.

“We are committed to ensuring that all inhabitants of this planet receive their daily bread, fresh air to breathe and clean water to drink as we are aware that, if we want justice and peace, we must protect the habitat that sustains us.”

The Vatican spokesman, Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the document was “important” but is not a piece of the church’s key teachings and merely reflects the conclusions of the independent scientists involved.

That said, he noted that it was a “significant scientific contribution” to the concerns that Pope Benedict XVI has voiced in both his encyclicals and public statements.

Benedict has been dubbed the “green pope” for his environmental concerns: In 2008, the Vatican installed photovoltaic cells on the roof of its main auditorium. A year later it installed a solar cooling unit for its main cafeteria. The Vatican has also joined a reforestation project aimed at offsetting its CO2 emissions.

Brenda Ekwurzel, the assistant director of climate research and analysis at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a Cambridge, Massachusettss-based think tank, said the report was a “straightforward recap of major known findings about glaciers,” that was penned by high-caliber scientists. She highlighted one significant point in the report’s title and throughout; it refers to the new geologic “era” of human modification of the world, known as “Anthropocene.”

“Perhaps the reality that the Vatican recognizes this fact, as the report indicates, is worth mentioning to those who remain unconvinced of human-induced climate change,” Ekwurzel said in an email.

The Vatican was late in getting in on the celestial mechanics and "solo fide" bandwagons too. It seems to be a habit.
Jefferson: I place economy among the first and important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our choice between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy.

i suggest you look up what your founders luther and calvin commented on kopernicus. as approving as about the jews. S13 the pope left copernicus alone, while luther and calvin condemned him openly as anti-scriptural. if you believe you belong to the reformed church, you are mistaken. it's the deformed church.

I wish I still had access to an article ,but,I don't. Anyway,it was written by a Canadian researcher who was a AGW alarmist and now is a skeptic. His change happened after the mid 1990s experiments proved the theory wasn't fact based.

Here's what he stated.

The theory needs new water vapor(caused by initial CO2 emissions) to add 2/3 more warming than CO2 alone does. That is the theory. It held that there would be large and numerous "hot spot" water vapor clouds up to 10K feet above the earth's surface.

Since the theory has been propounded, there has yet to be 1 ever recorded by the many thousands of climate balloons searching for one,so he decided after about a decade of searching, the theory was bs.

To whom do you speak?

Luther and others helped begin the Reformation, but they did not complete it. They still held on to many of the false doctrines and mistaken attitudes and prejudices of Rome. But I think the world--and Western Civilizaton in particular--is far batter off with Rome's absolutism broken. And individual Christians are always better off when they understand that they can come to God themselves directly. They do not have to depend upon priests or a priesthood to connect them to Christ.

still, the issue remains of how to come to god directly, and that depends upon priests and a church to connect them to christ. do you suggest that reformed christians should forgo church services?

In the real church service, the individual Christians worship God together, through songs and prayers, class discussions and listening together to sermons, which they are free to discuss with each other and the speaker afterwards. But no one steps between the people and Christ, declaring that the people can only come to Christ through him. In the original koiné Greek of the New Testament, the preposition anti meant "in the place of," not "against," as so many people assume today because of the common English usage. Thus the term antichrist referred to someone who tries to take the place of Christ, standing in the way between Christ and the people. This is why historically Protestants have regarded the papacy as exhibiting the spirit of antichrist. Antichrist is not a person, but a system, a principle that would put man in the place of God. Thus it would ultimately lead to worshiping the creature instead of the Creator, even while pretending the most arduous piety.

i don't know, it seems that the live and let live approach of the centralized catholic church produces more enlightened results than the peer pressure, necessity to outperform each other in strenght and display of faith, and serving nationalism of your cults. it's the catholic, not protestant church which incorporated insights of the reality first, the heliocentric system, the age of the universe and earth by astronomy and geology, and evolution. the catholic church is growing, and the protestant shrinking. you don't suggest that catholics don't go to heaven, do you?

In fairness to Catholics,I don't think there was ever a time when they stated to an unbeliever,"First you must go through a priest to get to Christ". They believe in the Old Testament "confession to a priest",but, that's post belief confession when we screw up as we always will.

The Jews did that as well in the OT.

BTW,I happen to accept a specific critique of Quad's here as valid. Some Protestants and all Orthodox Christians integrate nationalism into their theology. I was guilty of that myself. My old Church believed that the USA was "God's client nation" just as ancient Israel had been and I believed that. I don't now, but,I did. So,here Quad is correct.
