FLASH NEWS:
Russia hit by Meteor: 1100 poeple injured!
They are lucky nobody died.

What's amazing it was 1/3 the size of the meteor that crossed Earth's trajectory on Friday and it was not detected.

Some amazing photos were taken!

JohnL,
If a ray guns are ever invented, they will much more effective weapons than projectile weapons, just as superior powder guns are to crossbows. But perhaps with a similar transition period the time these weapons are optimized.

Because they hit the target instantly and with extreme accuracy. They will make armors much less efficient, if not useless because current armors are designed to sustain projectile impacts, not thin beams melting their way through it. And they will be silent.

Fred, for a laser gun to have a penetrating beam, or a gun to project enough plasma to penetrate armour, we are talking about one hell of a huge power source. Do you think we can easily come up with a battery/power-source that is small enough to mount in the handle of a weapon, and be small enough to carry on one's hip?

I'm not saying that this is impossible, but with technology as we see it today, its unimaginable. We already have a laser anti missile gun, which is mounted in the nose of a Boeing 747, but the 747 houses the capacitor necessary to transfer the energy to the gun. Even if we developed a gun that used only half that volume, we will still not be hauling it around on our belts.

Sorry, but projectile weapons are going to be all the rage for the unforeseen future. And believing this or not believing it is where science fiction and fantasy part ways.

I agree but inter-stellar travel will take that long (and IMO even longer) to develop.
We will fire mini-laser guns able to destroy a building in a single shot before we fly to Alpha Centauri.

And that Fred, is why I have been saying for a long time now, that our solar system is so full of natural resources, and so large, that we have absolutely no problem with over-crowding or running out of resources.

The Oort Cloud alone will have so much material in the trillions of comets out there that we will be mining it for eons to come.

For an energy weapon to be portable, it would have to draw its power source from quantum space.

What Oort Cloud? It has never been detected. There is no evidence that it exists. It was conjectured solely as an explanation for how short-period comets still exist, which should have all burned up or melted away in under 20,000 years. Not only has there been no direct detection of any Oort Cloud, there also is no evidence of any celestial body passing by the solar system in the last million years, let alone 12,000 years, that could have disrupted the Oort Cloud and caused any cometary bodies to fall inward towards the inner solar system. Why do some people have such blind faith that the Oort Cloud exists? Is this objective science?

Gosh Ron, are you talking about the Creator here? Just replace "Oort Cloud" and place Creator" there, and you are also right on,........right?

Very good info, MV. Actually, I have already seen that evidence. Just among the many things that mainstream science seems to close its eyes to.

John L, I don't get your point about the Oort Cloud and the Creator. My point was that there has never been any verification that the hypothetical Oort Cloud exists. And even if there were such a huge field of cometary bodies out one-half to one light-year from earth, there is no record of any large celestial body passing through those outer regions in the past 20,000 years which could have caused a disruption in their orbits that could have produced a replenishment of the short-period comets that pass through the inner solar system. Since any such short-period comets should have burned up by now, they could not be any more than 12,000 years old. Like the rings of Saturn, etc.

But here is something to really be concerned about. Are you concerned?
--------------------------

Quote:Mr Bolden told US lawmakers that prayer was all that the US or anyone could currently do about unknown asteroids and meteors that may be on a collision course with Earth.

An asteroid estimated to be have been about 55 feet (17 metres) in diameter exploded on Feb 15 over Chelyabinsk, Russia, generating shock waves that shattered windows and damaged buildings. More than 1,500 people were injured.

Later that day, a larger, unrelated asteroid discovered last year passed about 17,200 miles (27,681 km) from Earth, closer than the network of television and weather satellites that ring the planet.

The events "serve as evidence that we live in an active solar system with potentially hazardous objects passing through our neighborhood with surprising frequency," said Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson, a Texas Democrat.

"We were fortunate that the events of last month were simply an interesting coincidence rather than a catastrophe," said US House of Representatives Science Committee chairman Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican.
