I seem to remember people being tortured and murdered for disagreeing with the church and scientific discoveries, wars ravaging the continent over interpretations of the bible and the practise of different brands of Christianity.
Wasn't it the emergence of 'enlightenment and rationalism' which eventually brought an end to the intolerance?
The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.
