United Press has a story out that says that smarts evolved from middle-management.

Quote:The Utah researchers say Ashkenazic diseases like Tay-Sachs are a side effect of genes that promote intelligence. They say for some 900 years Jews in Europe were restricted to managerial occupations, which were intellectually demanding.

Consider Dilbert's pointy-haired manager.
Here's another that really explains the scientific principle better.
More detailed article is one the economist site which seems to support John's thesis about the Separdic inferiority.

Who says that Sephardics are inferior? :?:
The Economist Article == This one is more complete.

Quote:Who says that Sephardics are inferior?

Oops. change support->contradict, inferiority->superiority.

No Freud, Einstein, Mahler or Tay-Sachs among Sephardics, right?

Article (and this issue) discussed on Free Republic.
While the "Zero Sum Game" may not apply here completely, I firmly believe that there is a connection between the abundance of some things and absence of others. For example, I find in my profession that Interior Designers who are very creative, almost to a fault are some of the most disorganized individuals alive.

Consequently, it seems that for all the increase in IQ that Ashkenazi's may have they more than make up for it in genetic abnormalities, and loss of wisdom. Einstein was incredibly brilliant, but at times forgot to don his trousers when heading to work, at least going out the door anyway. And the inordinate percentage of them falling for all that Collectivist feces is another wonderful indication that while they may be smarter than average, they are not applying it to it's full potential.

And while they have been persecuted by Europeans, I fear that this is not the cause, but mostly inbreeding. The Sephardic Jews have gone through no less persecution in the past, are not inbred, and while perhaps not as high an IQ(that is still debatable), are certainly wiser then their northern brothers. A glimps into Israel and how the two groups handle the Palestenian situation and politics is a wonderful way to compare them.
John, I totally agree with you about the correlation between what I would call abstract intellect (the ability to develop a profound scientific theory for instance) and common sense and basic social behavior. Again, I don't know that its a zero sum thing either, but some of the most brilliant people I've ever known (or even known of) were also some of the dumbest with regard to day to day living. What was the name of that mathematician fellow in that film from Ron Howard?
The Jews, especially of Europe, have been the beneficiaries of selective breeding, where all the less intelligent who failed to escape the pogroms were killed. The pogroms also tended to encourage development of skills in such trades as jewelry making, where they could pick up and escape with most of their wealth at a moment's notice. Also notice that throughout European history, it was always the Jews who had money, who lent to the nobility. Periodically the nobility would become so deeply in debt, that the only way to get out of debt was to launch a pogrom. But still it was always the Jews who were in the position to lend money even to kings.

Here I sit in Denton reading old posts. Here is my take on the brillant=people-who-have-no-common-sense-thing. Actually, it's not 'my take," as I can't take credit for it. Left-brained learning disabities are commonly recognized in our school system because of the rote-type learning that goes on there. However, there is a right-brain learning disability afoot which goes on undetected until you meet a brillant person/student who can't find their way around the block/tie their shoes or have what is known as "common sense," such as Einstein. Some of these people are the valedictorians who can't do anything other than make good grades (spitting out what was learned--rote learning).
And, an added thing about disabilities of the brain: some ADD or ADHD people are incapable of reading facial expressions (right-brain stuff, I think), so are constantly getting into trouble for pushing other people's buttons. People's personalities are a combination of these disabilities, or lack of. Of course, as we get older other things such as spatial abilities (right-brain) fail, which causes women, in particular  , to get lost easily (in contrast to earlier years), but still have the ability to abstract shapes in thin air and manipulate them so as to see the back side, and/ or side view. The brain is such an awesome organ! It can be a blessing or a curse, depending upon the luck with which we were born.

Or the time. Contemporary despised killer might have been a king in 12-th century. Biology continue to churn a characteristic sets with extremely slow changing individual components. Since there are a lot of components with variable intensity and interplay with environment the overall results seems to be different for each individual. But they do form clusters of behavior, so we have dull criminals - bright criminals - Stalins, Hitlers, Maos, Pol Pots, Saddams; teachers - dull scientists, engineers - bright scientists, engineers - Einsteins, Fermis, Bohrs, Maxwells, Heavysides; contemporary heavy metal or hip-hop musicians - dull musicians - bright musicians - Chopin, etc.
And the clusters are: criminals, specialists, musicians, etc. in a sea of ordinary folks.
whoah, wait did you just put Heavy Metal and hip hop under dull musicians?

What is with people on this forum and not understanding the music of the yougins? Is everyone here really that old?

Correct......and the circumstances of our time. And, each era of time values certain characterics differently. =D> I'm glad I was born in this present era. It fits my characteristics well. Lucky me :!:

As dirt. 8)

But, there were some heavy metal bands that I liked. But, probs too old for you to appreciate. AC/DC; Black Sabbath.......Guns ' Roses. Joe Walsh wasn't metal, but liked him. I like one song that Alice in Chains had years ago, but that's all that I liked from them.

Yes, old as dirt, but apreciate good music when it's available. Can't stand rap though (too brutal). Wish all them gangstuh's would blow each other up and be done with it, including Lil Kim.
Aw man, hip hop is awesome! And the new death metal guys is rock 'ard.

But I don't want to threadjack...

So, fill me in. Who's good now in your HO?
I know I'm biased, But Canadian hip hop is the kind of hip hop for people who don't like hip hop.

K-os, Swollen Members, Kardinal Offishal, and bunches of other cool canadians. It's better because they don't concentrate on the bitches ho's and guns type of hip hop.

Well, alrighty then. That's the main reason I don't like the rap in this country. Will Smith is OK, though. Thanks for the titles. I'll look around, but I'm as old as dirt, so it may take me some time.
