Cancellation of a long car race. Due to threats of murder. They brag about this as a victory.

Sure. I bet the locals are celebrating as well eh? Who needs infidels and all that tourist cash? Particularly in one of the poorest places in the world. Well done!

Well.. Even if I am not a special friend of gas-guzzling car races, it is sad that the classic Paris-Dakar rally is cancelled due to terrorist fears. It is just another sign of how Al-Qaeda is slowly destroying everyday life.

I hardly equate the cancellation of an auto race with "destroying everyday life" ... not in the western sense. But it's a crap deal for all the Africans who are going to end up being denied badly needed Euros and dollars. Some westerners may end up losing a few bucks ... but they aren't going to go hungry over it. Probably not the same case in Africa. Radical Islam is the gift that just keeps on giving ... whether it's taking money out of peoples pockets, food out of their mouths, sexual mutilation of women, stoning adulterers, presiding over marriages to goats or offering suicide bombing as political dialog. One of America's early mottoes was "Victory OR Death". For these guys it's "Victory AND Death". They ARE a frigging death cult. They worship it and seek it out ... they cultivate it.

Dollars? You have neither cars nor drivers to compete at that level. No bikes, no cars, no trucks. Says something about your technology and manufacturing.
Well, looks as if they gonna move the race to either Asia or South America.
Point taken Q .... I should have included the ¥. Not as though anybody could compete with the Japanese in that particular race. Not in this century at least.

I still submit that the crazies have shat upon a good many people in North Africa by taking (fill in the blank monetary units) out of their pockets. The damage to A.S.O. is probably pretty minimal in comparison. No one in France is going to starve to death over this.

Per your comment, I figure Asia. The Chinese are probably contacting A.S.O. as we speak. Plenty of similarly brutal terrain in Mongolia ... with a dearth of Islamonutcases.
Yak,

Let's give the enemy their due. This is a pr win for them. I know,I can threaten to murder someone personally and probably could cause their wife not to shop as often and yea, that's really not a manly big thing for me to accomplish, but it is to a Muslim Zealot.

I think once they figure out certain things, they'll learn to shut down lots of normal commerce even in Europe and America.

I'm not prepared to give them that much 'due'. This was probably one helluva dangerous place to race even without the newest threat of beheading by the Islamosh*theads. The wife may change venues out of fear ... but she certainly ain't shopping any less. Commerce doesn't get shut down ... it moves elsewhere. In this case, it will likely move from one dirt poor part of the world to another (more hospitable) dirt poor part of the world. If I was an African, I'd be pretty POed about it.
Yak,

I guess I just accept they have under developed potential to harm us that you don't. I've thought of 2 or 3 things I'd be doing if I was one of them that they haven't started yet.
Palladin,

Frankly I don't have a dog, horse or car or driver in the Dakar race. And I'm not about to let some sh*theads lurking in the sand on another continent threatening a bunch of Frenchmen alter my lifestyle one little iota.

... now if they were f*cking with NASCAR ... that's a different story.

Oh... So it will become the Paris-Dalian car race?

Well, why not...

The Chinese are soon taking over the world so this is a good beginning....

Wasn't the very same thing stated about the Japanese in the 1980s? For some reason your island country has this terrible habit of being overrun by neighbors who are less than gentle with you. I would be worried about PRC gaining too much power there. Perhaps a treaty between you, taiwan, Vietnam, Japan, and perhaps Korea?

Still, I suspect India will reach the finish line before PRC, whatever a finish line is at the time. Wink1

The last years VW led for most of the stages, if I'm not mistaken last year with three cars up to the last stage, when they all crashed. S4 Mitsubishi's great asset is this grazy French driver Peterhansel, who won in the nineties everything on bikes, and is a class of his own in cars as well. Personally I like the trucks most, you can't them soup up so much as the cars for the purpose of this spezific race (who would believe that years back, a Porsche 911 won the deep sand race?), they are close to serial products. Dominated by East European manufacturers, interestingly.
This year's Dakar is the most spectacular ever, the terrain of Argentine and Chile is tougher than Afrika. Deserts, pampas, rainforrests, swamps, Andes crossings up to 4,800 metres. Many crashes, some fatalities. Half the fleet is out at midway. Mitsubishi is experiencing a fiasko this year, most of their cars retired due to technical failures. The serial winners of the past, Peterhansel and Alphand on Mishibushi weren't competitive on the first stages, an Arabian guy led for days on a BMW M3. Crashed out. Looks like a clean podium sweep for VW, and the former world rally champion Carlos Sainz is leading.

Who cares can google.
The region crossed by the Paris-Dakar track is very safe. My nefew went there last year and I know several poeple who went there. Thousands (maybe tens of thousands), mainly german, retirees spend the winter there in their mobile home.
This place is increasingly touristical.

But the Dakar race can be an easy target, a very mediatic one. So the organisation didn't want to give the islamists this chance.
It's very bad for the economy. It's interresting to note that islamists are looking for wrecking the economy and tourism.
Nothing better for a hotbed of Islam fundamentalism than a poor country.
Why else would they want to cancel a race that supposedly brings money into a poor country.....

These people are stupid, but they know how to achieve a goal, and so far they seem to be getting better at using Islam as globally imperialistic religious and political entity.
