Humm, and get this.

Quote:Every seventh person with a doctorate in science leaves Germany for the United States, The Scientist magazine has reported. Three of the four German Nobel Prize winners work in the United States. "The trouble is that we are losing our highest achievers," Christoph Anz of the Confederation of German Employers Associations told The Scientist. "We have reached the point where we will no longer be able to compete in the booming biotechnology sector." ...

"American universities offer scientists better pay conditions, more time for research and less time spent teaching," said Peter Doermann, a research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology near Berlin. Some estimates say that scientists can earn three times as much money working in the United States compared to Germany

Hey, if experience is a good indicator, then this is true. We have two members here, and if we use statistics, things certainly don't look good for the Krauts. Both of our members had already fled their Vaterland, for better climate AND conditions.

Thanks for the information. It's quite enlightening.

I wonder what our two Germans have to say here?
With students and potential students like Quadrat and Stroll, not to mention LeTonk, how euro professors could leave to live with barbarians who eat at McDonalds and drive poorly built SUV's...

It is a clear case of impotence and envy, all rolled into one. We shall have to wait for the younger ones to get with the program, because these here are not living in reality: they are living in Thailand.
I concede that if I had wanted to make lots of money, earn a pension, raise my children, etc., I would not have moved to Thailand in 1967, when I actually considered moving to Brisbane, Adelaide, or Perth. Just too far away, and too much like where I already was (San Antonio).

Brain drains have been going on for a long time. I wonder if the brightest minds in western Europe - the ones under 40, with a Ph.D. - feel that they can't break through the seniority ranks, can't earn enough money at home.

I'd like to make more profound comments, but I'm watching the world's dumbest horror movie and am very didstracted by narfs....
Well stone the crows! YC has started yet another Europe is dying thread S2
Europeans have been leaving Europe since time immemorial, the US is testament to this.

True. And guess which has been the better for it? Wink1
Short term thinking John. Europe's colonisation of the Americas (North & South) contributed to the growth and development of Europe too. That is still true, Europe would be the poorer if America didn't exist.

Whatever you say Pepe. BTY, just Why are you in Thailand?

See here, why Thailand specifically, my wife is Thai.
A couple of scientists go for a couple of years to the USA. So what? High intelligence is a trait of Germans, we produce scientists like an assembly line. What's wrong if they become ambassadors of knowledge and culture for some time? You can only benefit. I suggest yankeecat and John pay a visit to the next Goethe Institute, there's a lot of them in the USA, and expand your horizon by more than you ever dreamed of.

Yes, yours is bigger than ours. You are the most advanced civilisation on earth in every respect imaginable.

Happy now? S2

(yet it seems they have to continually import their brainpower from places like Germany or the UK. )

You guys STILL haven't a clue. It is not that we HAVE to import brainpower, but that conditions are so much more conducive for attracting brainpower.
John,
if you say so... It's not only our scientists who go abroad, wherever I travelled to, there were German bakers and butchers and hoteliers at the remotest places. You know, it's ability that gives them a living everywhere, not necessarily the conditions offered by the host countries. You confuse cause and result.
Today....
German exports surge to new high

That's Great!! Perhaps soon, Germans will be wealthy enough to afford purchasing more from others, to help with all that extra cash they are gathering in.
