Part of winning the war on terror is convincing the people in the Middle East that America is not evil, presumably through the use of logic and by example. But how can anything work when stories like this take hold (and yes, the link is to aljazeera):

'Alien message' sparks tsunami panic

Quote:The Ufological Research Centre said on its website last week that a tsunami could hit the Atlantic after a comet passes close to earth on Thursday, May 25.

Eric Julien, author of La Science Des Extraterrestres (Science of Aliens), claimed that the impact of a comet fragment would trigger powerful volcanoes in the Atlantic and generate a giant tsunami that would be destructive across the coasts of several countries, including Morocco.

Moroccan coastal residents are heading to higher ground as you read this convinced that a tsunami like the one that devastated Asia. And just how did Julien come up with this knowledge? I guess the aliens told him:
Quote:Julien, who claimed to have received the information psychically, said that waves up to 200 metres high will reach coastlines of countries bordering the Atlantic.

This is the same Eric Julien who, according to the Morocco Times, claimed in May 2004 to have been abducted by aliens who wanted to teach him to drive UFOs.

Shock ummm, yeah.

So people are actually swallowing this swill - they're abadoning their homes to head to safe ground based on this nutjob's predictions.

If the people of the ME are so capable of believing this tripe, it's no wonder they believe everything else handed out to them by muslim leaders that are probably just as crazy. How do you overcome such ignorance?
I don't think education will cause Muslims to like us,however,I have to defend them here. We've done the same basic ignorant stuff, remember the story about the war of the worlds when Orson Welles read it over the radio in New Jersey?
I don't know if you can judge the intelligence of all muslims based on this. Look at all the morons here in the United States that believe we never landed on the mood. Michael Moore who believes we invaded Afghanistan to put a pipeline.
Dem,

That's my point, our society has as much ignorance within it as any Muslim society does. The difference is not ignorance,it is VIRTUE.

While we're in short supply, they are almost devoid of it. I would say the same about Germany and America or China and America.
Many Americans are still superstitious enough to think that broken mirrors, walking under ladders, and having a black cat cross their path will bring bad luck. Stevie Wonder's song "Superstition" was popular in the late 20th century.

I know Mexican-American citizens of the USA who believe in ghosts and witches. Christians think God is a ghost! The Old Testament had sorcerers and necromancers. Thai Buddhists believe in active ghosts and various non-Buddhist superstititons.

If you lived in a tsunami-ravaged country on 12/26/2004, as I did, you would understand paranoia about tsunamis. The earthquake woke me up that Sunday morning, a thousand miles away.

The Bush administration has parlayed people's fear of another attack like that on 9/11/2001 to scare the people into accepting Orwellian control measures. Since I was a thousand miles away at the time also, in a conflict zone with vivid memories of the eleven-day Zapatista revolution, I was more aware of 1/1/1994, the date NAFTA and the revolution started. Non-Christian Mayas told us how a Zapatista rebel soldier turned into an eagle and devoured the head of their comrade, and then flew away with the corpse. They told us this in all seriousness in 1999.

Oh, wait: Americans believe in socialism, and capitalism, and they believe the USA is a democracy!! :o

The possibility of another 9/11 attack is not superstition. We do live in democracy. How else do you explain a left wing moron like Jimmy Carter, a degenerate like Bill Clinton, a respectable intellectual like Ronald Reagan and a true leader like President Bush all elected by the same country. We have choices and we choose differently, its a democracy.
The only Orwellian measures being taken now are those seeking our enemy, that's a good thing,IMO. If Thai really believes that,I would choose not to ever return here though.
I thought the subject was superstition, and how people in the Arab and Muslims states, as well as North American and Asian countries, believe ideas about supernatural phenomena. However, I doubt that such superstitions teach us much about why Arab and Muslim states do what they do. Wasn't it Nancy Reagan who had an astrologer?
Thai,

I think I made the same case above,we're as ignorant as any society on earth. Which proves ignorance is NOT the difference between America and Nazi Germany,Islamist Iran or the Taliban or Joe Stalin's Soviet Empire.

VIRTUE is the difference. We have it in small but strong quantities and these I listed have lesser or NONE from GOD's Viewpoint.

He can find the "righteous men" in America,he finds fewer to none in the others, thus we relatively prosper. The "righteous men" may be few and far between, but they exist here and not there.

Sure Nancy had an astrologer but President Reagan did not base his policies on superstition such as other governments in the world. He based his policies on intellectual strategic assessments. His tax cuts were not based on astrology but on his studies. Perhaps he initiated something on a certain day instead of the other but the purposes of the policy was based on intellect.
It was rather an embarrassment for me when I read of Nancy's "reading the tea leaves" problem. That trash is as old as the garden of Eden.
Reagan's policies were based on political considerations, like most presidents.
Anon,

I know, but it was still an acute embarrassment for me to read of her faith in star gazing. You would think that these types of attempts to discern the future would be discredited by now in human history.
