Does this bother anyone, other than me? I thought the policy of the US government was NOT to subsidize Hamas as long as they refused to renounce the aim of the destruction of Israel. What is the matter here? Can't the US be counted on to do exactly what it states?

NEW YORK -- The United States agreed under pressure yesterday to the creation of a system to transfer funds for salaries and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians -- a softening of its unbending effort to isolate Hamas.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also announced a donation of $10 million in emergency medical assistance for residents of the Gaza Strip, where hospitals are reporting shortages of medical supplies because of the cutoff of aid to the Hamas-led Palestinian government.
As much as $4 million worth of supplies could be distributed as early as today, according to the State Department, with the remainder to be distributed through the United States Agency for International Development and the United Nations Children's Fund.
"The thrust of this is the international community is still trying to respond to the needs of the Palestinian people," said Miss Rice, who hours earlier had urged the world to maintain a hard line against Hamas.
The announcements followed a daylong meeting of the Middle East Quartet -- the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia -- where several Arab leaders warned that the financial squeeze on the Palestinian Authority (PA) could lead to civil war.
Today, hours after the agreement to channel direct aid to the Palestinians, Hamas signaled it still had problems accepting Western demands on Israel.
"The Quartet have conditions. They aim to push the Palestinian government to make concessions that harm [Palestinian] rights and red lines and give the [Israeli] occupation legitimacy," said Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

As you can see, they clearly have no intentions of EVER changing their minds. So why do we allow them to have tax dollars, knowing that they are unmovable?

Comments anyone?
Because in every bureaucracy the process is much more important than any goal and it takes a real leader like Churchill, FDR, Stalin, Mao, and Hitler (yes, Stalin, Mao and Hitler)* to declare the goal and go for it by forcing bureaucracy to follow no matter any tactical political expediency. We do not have any leaders or even clear goals and this means (at least for me) that we will muddle along till next serious crisis (or series of crises) on a scale bigger than 911.

)* There were evil and thankfully they've lost, but no one can deny that they did articulated their goals clearly and stick to them.
Yes,it bothers me. It bothered me before they openly elected the Arabic Nazi praty as their government.

WHY should any US asset go to Palestinian Nazi culture?
So they can spread terrorism and kill us all. I hate bureaurats.
Well, to be fair, the idea is to bypass the Govt and get it straight to the people. Not even Abbas is getting his hands on it. Once the channels ar eopened, then Israel will begin sending its Tax Revenues for Palestine. How they are doing this, i don't know. But i hope it works. The Middle Eastern countries don't seem to have enough charity within them to take care of their own peple. The Palestinians are exploited. They deserve the best in life like anyone else...

I guess that neither you, nor me, (nor even the originators of the idea) know whether it is even possible to do. They are trying to prevent the self-dissolution of a last ~30 years artificial creation of the "palestinians" as unique "people" because they (the originators) are in a grip of the idea proven unworkable by the history, namely, the still another honorific state the contemporary governments throughout the world are bend over to give the Arabs since the end of the WWII and which the Arabs (lately "palestinians") consistently refuse to take a posession of. The idea will eventually fail as all other ahistorical ideas failed before. Unfortunately, I can even predict how will it fail: it will be drawn in a sea of blood. Both of the "palestinians" and others.
There is no way Al Qaeda would allow a peace process to occur in the Levant.

I just feel bad for the Palestinian people. They hate us, but they have no idea what the reality is.

Since when we should ask for their "allowance"? The prob. is that we deliberately calibrate our force application to match their abilities to stir troubles. It seems that Bush really wants the loooong war.

Well, one makes ones choices, one lives with the consequences. I have no choice but to live by this principle and I am sure you do as well. Why they should be shielded from it? And for what?
2 things

1)Bush is the POTUS,blame HIM.

2) I do NOT desire to help Nazi culture and the people who live and breathe it. Nor their government.
