Great news, quite a few guys I served with died this year due to cancer.

yes, exactly, promising approach, albeit in this area most things that LOOK promising end up going nowhere. This MAY be different.

there is another item which MAY be hugely significant -- or may be I am jumping to wrong conclusions here.

It is not even listed under medicine or biology, so possible implications may not be noticed by the authors... but:

per article yesterday, researchers obtained new state of liquid water, at -68C.

Possible practical implication: anabiosis that works. (it is the water crystallization that kills the idea now).

Of course another state of water is bound to have many other applications, much easier, too.... not that it is clear what they are.... but another state of any basic substance always has applications.
