Looks like they are still actively searching for it out there. Unfortunately the sky is huge and locating an individual brown dwarf is very, very difficult. They just happened to luck up on this find.

COMET DODGES CMEs: NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft has been monitoring Comet Pan-STARRS, taking hundreds of pictures as the comet passed by the sun this month. Yesterday, analyst Karl Battams of the Naval Research Lab assembled the data into a single movie spanning eight days, from March 9th through 16th. Click to set the scene in motion:

STEREO-B is stationed over the farside of the sun, so cameras onboard the spacecraft can look back and see Earth as well as the comet. In Battams' movie, the sun is located just outside the field of view on the left. Massive clouds of magnetized plasma (CMEs) billow away from the sun toward the comet, but according to Battams, none hit their mark:

"There were two CMEs in that sequence and it seems they went either side of the comet," he says. "That's a shame for us scientists because we would like to study how CMEs interact with a comet."

CMEs have been known to rip the tails off comets that pass too close to the sun, but that did not happen to Comet Pan-STARRS.

"By the way," adds Battams, "I've looked closely at the STEREO images and can see no indication of the possible fragment recently reported on I also haven't noticed any unusual brightening or disruption in the comet tail that would hint at such a fragmentation event having occurred."
Incidentally, here is the sun seven days ago. And of the sunspots are very weak in a part of the cycle where activity should be at its peak.

It always amazes me how smugly sure the astronomers are of their observations and explanations. It is a good thing their days of theological power have long passed.

Water from Shoemaker-Levy 9 is still hanging around in Jupiter's upper atmosphere.
Here is something quite enlightening: Russia meteor virtually impossible to see coming. If you consider that the object was only about 15 metres in diameter, yet packed the equivalent of about 30 times the energy output of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, it should sober anyone.

Near misses by bolides is a definite threat, but an EMP Solar flare is 50-years overdue, and could wreak as bad or worse damage. A few politicians have worked to put something in place to minimize the damage expected, but there is little attention paid to it. Had Gingrich been elected, we would have a program ready - he is one of the few politicians with the scientific acumen to get it. Newt Gingrich calls EMPs “an enormous catastrophic threat.” Representative Ed Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, said, “the electric grid’s vulnerability to cyber and to other attacks is one of the single greatest threats to our national security.”

Another Carrington Event is due. Our most important components need to be protected by Faraday cages. Perhaps the scenario in the TV show Revolution may actually occur.

Get ready for a new naming contest! Astronomers with SETI — the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence — just confirmed that they've found a 14th moon orbiting the planet Neptune.

Say hello to S/2004 N 1, which SETI astronomer Mark Showalter found on July 1st. This tiny satellite, which is only around 20 kilometres wide, was found orbiting between the moons Larissa and Proteus, and it goes around Neptune every 23 hours.
When Showalter spotted this tiny dot, which the Hubble website says "is roughly one hundred million times fainter than the faintest star that can be seen with the naked eye," he wasn't even looking for it. He was using the powerful space telescope to track the planet's faint ring arcs.

They should name it Hubble or after the Astronomer who discovered it.
