Quote:Population loss is acceptable only if the borders are sealed, otherwise you get Kosovo.
Not necessarily so. Kosovo was my own idea if you remember. Wink1
But I am less and less hooked on this scenario.
If I am right Yogoslavians invited Albanians on their territory and let them settle uncontrollably as peasants.
China is still agararian country, escpecially in the backward north. Yes, we invite them to work, but they are only cheap labor good for low construction work or growing of tomatos and watermelons. We can control this. Moreover Duma issued a law forbidding foreigners to be sellers in proportion of more than 40% to locals on the markets that were occupied by Chinese. When the law was signed by Putin, Chinese left. Could they do otherwise? I doubt. Skilled and qualified Chinese is a rare fruit to find in Russian FE. Low-labor workers are enough among Russians.
Summing up, Chinese cannot work in trade, in industry, and the land for seeding is too tough a business for a foreinger not familiar with Russian beurocracy. Wink1

Quote:1. In the far east region, the current trend will result in the Chinese majority. Eventually it will link up with the home country.

The problem is not one trend, there is a number of trends.
For example, a little fact that many young Russians started to move their elderly parents in China's bordering towns. They discovered that one
can survive in China for 1 dollar a day, food and home included. To get registration for residence is very easy in China too. Wink1
Russian babushkas feel very good with their $150 monthly pension in China. But that's not all.
In spite different prognoses population in the big Russian cities of FE is not decreasing, it is growing. We face the concentration of population as China does. People are leaving villages and small towns for the lights of big city. That's the point everyone miss.

Putin declared Vladivostok to be one of four gambling zones to be installed in Russia (a type of Las Vegas) and more than $3 bln is going to be invested in the infrastructure of the city.

Quote:2. In many other regions, the population is actually growing. These are the Muslim regions. In fact, some said that the breakup of the old Soviet Union was forced to avoid the Muslim majority; spinning off Central Asia did this...but only for a while.
It was Stratfor, you have said it.
Well, Tatars are Muslims, but their birthrates and lifestyles are typically Russian (or European, as you wish). And the only Muslim regions with high birth rates is the contryside of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia.
The picture of cities is different. If we are able to involve those people into industry and services and give them good education for that, they will never break away.
Having met a few Russians (and citizens of the former USSR), my opinion is the following:

The population decline, abortion rate, etc are due to a simple fact:
They're a bunch of cold, depressed, pale, defeated people. They've been through so much crapp, repeatedly, for so long, that their very souls are but a hollow shed skin of humanity.

They loathe the very thought of life and happiness is but a memory far away out of reach. This is apparently genetic as their children, born in North America, inherit their depression and apathy in most cases.

Basically, they don't want to live, and the sooner death comes the better, because anything's better than living in Russia. Wink1
You forgot to say coupla words about vodka and bears on the streets.
Unforgivable blunder.

Most of this could be said about most of Western Europe and Japan too, but without the despair. Those populations decline almost as rapidly, but while they are "enjoying the good life" and struggling to maintain welfare benefits. I suspect the same inner devastation from the horrors WWII. Does anyone else have another hypothesis?
The long article about Russia's declining population points out that there isn't anything necessarily wrong about a country's population declining. Russia as the USSR was too big; Russia is still very large in population. Ireland lost so many people to starvation and emigration - more than half of all the Irish, I believe - and is now thriving, for lots of reasons, although my son and his daughter increased Ireland's population!!

The chief problem appears to be an aging demographic in some cultures that aren't prepared. It is not fair to make all the youngest adults pay welfare for the retirees.
Though, you personally decreased Ireland's population...
didn't you?Wink1

No, we don't know if any of our American ancestors ever hailed from the emerald isle of potatoes. I have increased the USA's population by 5 remaining children and 9 of their children, and that one son and I decreased it by two. S1

I think six to ten million is a nice size for a country. The Nicaraguans know Daniel Ortega, Jaime Morales, Violeta Chamorro, and Arnuldo Aleman well enough to elect them when they wish, and put the worst scoundrel in jail when they can. I noted that the Irish know their leaders fairly well. It's hard to fool a country composed of a handful of counties of well-educated citizens. S1
It's clear that we need 200-300 millions people to defend our territories.

Just compare. On Far East near Chinese border only 6 million people live, from Chinese side 110 millions.

But I'm sure that it won't decrease till 2030. Something will happen in 2013-15 and it will increase.
