Have you thought about retiring abroad?
#1
Want to talk about it? Did you know you can't get a visa to retire in Canada? Join a growing community of American expats and also those who have already retired abroad at http://www.RetireAway.com

Why would you want to go to Canada and retire?

Why not? They have some rather nice spots. And not all cold. Like British Columbia.

There are several emigres to Thailand on this web. What is the attraction? What are medical facilities like? How far with a dollar of retirement income go? Do you dare live outside of a big city (i.e. in the "country")? Do you dare live in a small town? Are people of pallor regarded with enmity?

I'll retire after my 8 years in the white house. I'll pay for your health care TQ so you live through all 8 years. I'll have you on suicide watch as a matter of fact. There's no escape.

I'll retire here in America. A nice mansion in the south. I don't need to go to the child rape capitol of the world or smelly France. I don't like maple syrup or pancakes so Canada is not an option.

Great. There are many places, and you might want to shun the most popular expatriate places like San Miguel de Allende and Lake Chapala, which both got overrun by gringoes. I lived in weird places in Chiapas.

There are many attractions, other than prostitution, which is widely available elsewhere, as well. The medical facilities in a few places - mostly Bangkok and Chiang Mai - are almost equal to an average hospital in the USA, but without the full expertise you expect, at a tenth of what you might pay in NYC (under $90 for a full denture! Ten dollars to see a specialist surgeon, without a long wait, in air conditioning!). A thousand dollars of US monthly retirement income wouldn't be comfortable, but two or three thousand per month would do very well, even allowing for inflation, currency fluctuation, unplanned emergencies, etc.

There are cities and villages in the entire range; mountains and beaches and flat plains. Hot weather all year, barely cool in the winter. Where many of us live, there are six months of rain and six months of dry, like Central America.

Dark skin tones are subtly discriminated against; Thais prefer the lightest possible skin. They are also quite xenophobic, but foreigners with $2,000 monthly income are considered rich, so skin color pales to white in those cases. S1 But Thais are generally smiling, laid back, and friendly, if you don't give them good reason to kill you. At this time, the three southernmost provinces are clearly unsafe, due to the insurgency; Songkhla province is also too far south for comfort.
I'm often wrong. But I'm not always wrong!

It takes a small man to rejoice in the short comings of others. When I enter the "White House" I'll make sure I wiretap and blacklist you cat. Wink1 In fact I'll rename it the "Conservative House".

We aren't sure where exactly. Our retirement is a loooooong way off. But since there are laws against foreigners buying land on the coast, my wife will maintain her Mexican citizenship. She will probably be the one to choose the spot.

I just want a boat so I can fish.

Didn't you say you'd try to improve the quality of your comments, a while ago, indy?
The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

I beg you I4B, take your axiom to heart!

President does seem fitting though. I would choose another path. A media mogul perhaps or a leading industrialist. Someone has to make all the money from your impending wars. And don't worry, you'll be well compensated when my lobbyists make their rounds, I'll even let you use the private jet, just bring her back with a full tank.

jt,
if you are driven by libido, Thailand is the best place to go to. If not, for God's sake, avoid it. It's filthy and extremely unsafe. The natives can mimic kind of social behaviour for money, otherwise you get pure enmity. Thailand got the lowest rating of all holiday destinations at a poll on the tourism exhibition in Berlin last year. The number of western tourists is apart from the Brits shrinking rapidly, replaced by Russians, Chinese and Indians.
Should I lose the interest for tens of thousands of willing girls available 24/7, I'll go to Croatia. Breathtaking nature along the Adria cost, sparsely populated, warm and dry, ancient towns, to the Alps and six or so different countries in no more than two, three hours by car.
