Rio Olympics
#21
I think that Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, and even the Ukraine would object to being lumped together with Russia, who held them as part of the old Soviet Union unwillingly. Remember when Soviet tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia to put down their independence movement? Remember when Stalin killed 30 million Ukrainians by starving them when they resisted the collectivization of their family farms?

Do you remember the old joke told by the Poles that they prayed that China would invade Poland three times? The rationale was that if the Chinese army invaded Poland three times, it would have to cross Russia six times. No nation in history has ever been hated by its neighbors more than Russia.

By the way, the Poles, Romanians, Czechs, Serbs, Croats, and Hungarians were not Slavs. Most of the Ukrainians probably were not, either. I'm not sure about the demographics of the 'Stans.

So 19 gold medals is in fact all that the Russians won at the Olympics. Maybe they would have had a better showing if so many of their athletes had not been banned for doping cheating. Which is an important kind of losing in itself.

Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary never competed as a member of the Soviet Union.
