Incidentally, I would imagine that Neanderthals living around the arctic circle would also most likely have had epicanthic folds. Its natural selection's way of helping to counter "snow blindness" as sun's rays bounce off snow and cause one to be unable to see. That's why it is almost certain that Mongoloids originated from the Arctic area and migrated southward.

Here's the home made Inuit snow goggles they used for thousands of years, well before modern technology. Many still use them. By the way, they really do work, because I tried them once on Winter Survival camp when I was a scout in Alaska.

Some Asians still have epicanthic folds big time, while other don't. Most of the former still live way up north in Siberia, Mongolia, and Korea. That's why its also called a Mongolian Fold. The upper eye lid is naturally forced down so as to shade the person from the intense light reflection off the snow.

Along these lines, the head garb Arab's wear( forgot what it is called) and the Mexican sombrero look goofy to us, but, go live where they live and see how effective each is at it's job.

The Arab thing causes sand to fly around your face and not in your eyes, the sombrero I wore once at work as a joke was awesome compared to a typical straw hat.

I bet both have been around over a millenium.

Prehistoric people have always found solutions for surviving in a hostile planet. With people living in souther climes, the sun's rays are handled differently, because it is the direct rays that cause the most trouble. In the polar regions, it is reflection that is the most dangerous. The first time I put on one of those native made slit gogles, the difference was like night and day.
