I used to hunt Antelope in an area called Pawnee National Grasslands. It's basically a patchwork of homestead sections in NE Colorado that the Feds bought back during the dust bowl/depression. Looks a lot like South Dakota only with much less grass. Every once and a while you'd find the remains of a 'Sodi' Dugout in the side of a hill. No trees as far as the eye can see in any direction. Places so flat, you get a fairly unobstructed 360° view of the horizon for miles ... actually gives you a little bit of vertigo if you turn all the way around with your eyes on the horizon. Virtually no water. Maybe -20°F in winter ... over 100°F in summer. I can't possibly imagine scratching out an existence from that. Tough folks!
