Why We Shouldn't Get All Worked Up Over Threat of Terrorism
#1
I'm putting this in the History and Education Section because I'm trying to keep the politics in secondary position.

I posted on another thread as to how absurd all this fear of terrorism is and how it is leading to our loss of Liberties, all in the guise of protecting the citizenry from outside threats. And it really is absurd because the number of deaths throughout the world, due to terrorism, is miniscule, compared to other accident fatalities. And too the president, congress, and the military are not in place to protect the citizenry from danger. They are there to protect our Constitutional Liberties, first and foremost.

But lets look at the numbers. Here is a breakdown of itemized deaths in the US, within the year 2000, and numbers for each possible category. As you can see all death due to the different forms of traffic accidents are 46,749. Even deaths from falls are 13,322. Of those number 1307 are from falling down stairs.

These numbers are quite large. So how many are killed due to terrorism? I found this little page quite interesting: Terrorist caused Deaths vs. "Reality" .

Quote:1. More fatalities occur "each day" from auto accidents then occur from terrorism for the "whole year".
(1.2 million deaths per year Worldwide)

2. More fatalities occur worldwide each year from animal attacks then occur from terrorism.
( Stats for US Only 1882)

3. More fatalities occur each year from falling down stairs (falling down) then occur from terrorism.
( Just for the Netherlands 1700 deaths in 1999)

4. More fatalities occur "each day" from medical malpractice then occur from terrorism for the "whole year".
( US stats Only - 120,000 deaths worldwide 1.4 million)

So why are we allowing ourselves to become so ruled by fear of terrorism? And why are we so willing to give up our liberties at the airports, or anywhere else, for that matter, all in the name of preventing terrorism?

Am I the only one who is not impressed with all this hype and outrageous spending?

You left out the lives that are lost through abortion each year.

You're right. But to be fair, I worry about fetuses, and not embryos. However, that's a personal thing.

I need to look up what John said in 2004 about the terrorist threat, but I agree with the one above. About 170,000 people die every day anyway, so this whole terrorist thing has always been blown out of proportion. 170,000, the good lord's HR department is really busy.

What about choking to death on food? It is more deadly than you might think. Far greater than non-slum firearm deaths.

There ought to be terrorist jokes. E.g. "one day two terrorists walked into a bar .... ". Maybe that would cut the hysteria.

But, politicians have to talk about something don't they? They cannot afford to let the terrorist crisis be reduced to mere minor statistics. Much breast thumping needs to be done.
Jefferson: I place economy among the first and important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our choice between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy.

I agree, John. As I compared before, terrorists are less dramatic than gang-bangers who populate American cities, causing attention-getting crimes - then running home to hide behind their mother's skirts.

What is noteworthy - is that the terrorists play to the media. If the media didn't make them a cause celebré, then they would be a minor inconvenience. But since the media magnifies the terrorism effect, the public makes them a central issue to their political thinking. On a macro-scale, When General Giap was ready to surrender in Vietnam after his failed Tet Offensive, Walter Cronkite said the US embassy was overrun (which it wasn't} and that the North had won the battles (which they soundly lost). This was news to Giap, who set aside his decision to end the war - and reset his campaign, but now aimed at the media, and not the military.

It's the politics of fear that keeps politician in power nowadays, Bill. You play you part in it with all this WMD in Iraq bullshit you continue to produce, and I'm sure you will regard terrorists as a great treat again when you have a Republican president. That'll have to wait till 2016 at least.

Wrong, again. It is not the politics of fear. It is the laziness and insecurity of the media, who refuse to do their jobs as true journalists, and prefer their news stories handed to them already written.

History is set. What happened can not be reinvented by political hacks who need some excuse for their incompetence and for the success of their opponents. Terrorists are lame functionaries of political manipulators who stir up more attention than they deserve. The manipulators are all about personal power - not really religious zealots. If they were driven by faith, they would trust their God to win the battles.

It is the media that takes the minor hiccups of the terrorists and whip up the people into a fervor. This emboldens the manipulators into more acts of cowardice, and gives the media an easy story to sell. The useful idiots are always there to help.
